Currently, both active and passive air sampling protocols have been applied to monitor Cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMS) in ambient atmosphere. One of the key studies was carried out by Amelie Kierkegaard and Michael S. McLachlan, evaluating the use of commercial SPE cartridges to measure the air concentrations of cVMS in Sweden. However, the influence of suspended particles in air on the measured concentrations was not addressed and still remains unknown, although this might be an important factor which should be considered especially within the outdoor environment. With the purpose of solving this problem, this study developed a novel low_flow air sampler and evaluated its performance on the ambient sampling of cVMS.The sampler was composed of a7μm impactor, a5μm sieve plate and a trapping cartridge from top to bottom. Two SPE cartridges was used comparatively to trap cVMS (targeted on D3, D4and D5) in the air in the field and a low_flow pump (operated at3.4L min-1) was used to draw the air for48h. Synchronically, two samplers were running and one of them was spiked with native D3, D4and D5on the sampling head before operation and another one is used to determine the background concentrations of D3, D4and D5in the ambient air.The background concentrations of D3, D4and D5in air were5.5,10.6and31.9ng m-3respectively. Mean recoveries of the spiked D3, D4and D5were45.07±26.20(%),123.88±7.39(%) and77.76±21.86(%) respectively with SPE50(50mg adsorbent) cartridge. Comparatively, when SPE10(10mg adsorbent) was used, the recoveries were23.92±10.06(%),111.59±5.40(%),32.40±21.14(%) for them respectively. The breakthrough of D3and D4was not observed either on SPE50or SPE10cartridge and the breakthrough of D5was negligible (at0.51%and1.40%on SPE50and SPE10cartridge respectively). These preliminary results showed that this novel sampler can be reasonably used to collect cVMS in the ambient air. Further experiments will be carried out to evaluate, for cVMS sampling in ambient air, LOD/LOQ and other related factors of this sampler.
