Focused on honeycomb paperboard, this paper analyzed its flatwise compressive properties and cushioning properties when it have different raw material and structure, and the results, how raw material and structure influence the flatwise compressive properties and cushioning properties of honeycomb paperboard, have been obtained. The flatwise compressive strength and the plateau stress were studied as the flatwise compressive properties, and the cushioning coefficient-strain curves were used to analyze the cushioning properties of the honeycomb paperboard.This paper discussed the effects of different raw material on flatwise compressive strength. Some conclusions were obtained, the factor that influences the flatwise compressive strength most directly is the ring crush strength. The difference of faces have no major effect on it, but universal enhancement to honeycomb paperboard of faces has been found by analyzing the flatwise compressive strength of the honeycomb paperboard and the core. How structure of honeycomb paperboard influences its flatwise compressive strength has also been analyzed. The Mathematical model on the flatwise compressive strength and the side length of the hexagon and the Stretching ratio has been obtained by theoretical analysis, and then the theoretical prediction formula can be obtained by combining the theoretical analysis and test results. The structure’s effects on flatwise compressive strength and plateau stress including three aspects:the height of honeycomb paperboard, the side of the hexagon and the stretching ratio. Some conclusions were obtained:The prediction formulas have good agreement with the experimental result, the flatwise compressive strength of honeycomb paperboard decrease as the board gets thicker.The analysis of how the raw material and the structure influence the plateau stress shows:the faces almost have little effects on plateau stress, the plateau stress reduces linearly as the thickness increase, the plateau stress decreases linearly as the stretching ratio increase when stretching ratio is less thanl, the plateau stress decreases reduces as the side length of hexagon increase, and the slope gradually level off.The cushioning coefficient-strain curves have been obtained by analyzing the data of the static compression test, and the minimum of the cushioning coefficient and its strain are also obtained. Result shows:the honeycomb paperboard has better energy absorption characteristics if the board has greater thickness and less side length. The minimum of the cushioning coefficient almost occur when the strain is about70%.Combining the practical produce of factory, this paper also analyzed the paper consumption of the honeycomb paperboard, the paper consumption of honeycomb paperboard with different side length of hexagon, stretching ratio and the thickness of board has been obtained. And the actual paper consumption of honeycomb core has also been obtained,, it can help manufacturer to calculate the consumption more accurate.
