With the accelerated development of our industrial and science technology, more and more research and development activities need to be conducted in chemical laboratory. Laboratory test and analysis can be a strong technical support for pharmaceutical, food and domestic chemical industrials. However, the hazardous and toxic pollutants discharged to the environment during those activities have aroused public attention. Considering equipment costs and energy saving, no additional ventilation facilities are installed in most analyzing labs nowadays. So, fume cupboard becomes the most important ventilation equipment in laboratory.Influence factors of fume cupboard performance are the main research objective of this thesis, firstly a comprehensive questionnaire was distributed to different kinds of users in domestic industries. The questionnaire showed that the factors affecting performance of fume cupboards can be classified as "unsafe behavior" and "unsafe condition". Focusing on the latter, unsafe condition includes turbulence caused by internal obstacles, operation noise and status of routine and preventive maintenance. For the influence of obstacles, face velocity stability evaluation, flow visualization and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling were conducted and compared with each other for further analysis in this paper. For aerodynamically generated noise, CFD modelling was also adopted to predict and search for hot spots in the noise field of fume cupboard, then acoustic absorbent was installed and the improvement in noise spectra was observed. For routine and preventive maintenance, onsite survey and case study was carried out as a qualitative analytical method. In addition, some feasible countermeasures and solutions were put forwarded based on working practice. This study can provide a fundamental guidance to laboratory operators and researchers regarding fume cupboard safe operation and their occupational health&safety promotion.
