Waterborne paint is a water dispersion medium coating with low volatile organiccompounds (VOC) contents, safety and environmental friendship, and easy to application, hasbecome an important direction for the development of coatings. Preparation the waterbornepaint in accordance with "cooking style" to add additives will exhibit various defects in theproduction, storage, and application of waterborne paint, addition to increase costs due toimproper use of additives. To solve these problems requires a lot of manpower, materialsand times, and even make researchers had to re-develop new products. In view of these, thecompatibility principles of water-based coatings additives synergy between components werestudied, to solve the high Tg acrylic acid emulsion film formation difficult problem, but alsoreduces the VOC and TVOC (C6C16) contents of waterborne coatings, preparedwater-based coatings have excellent properties. The main conclusions are as follows:The wetting agents serve to reduce the surface tension of the waterborne coating, andhelp other additives exert beneficial effects. The types and amounts of defoamers determinewetting and leveling of waterborne coatings. Coalescent for the high Tg polymer latexes isessential additives, nano-emulsions can also be used to help further reduce the amount ofcoalescents. Leveling agents and thickeners or rheology additives are mainly contribution towater-based coatings viscosities, leveling and the final film quality. The high, medium andlow shear thickenings should be combined to meet the need of water-based paint in theproduction, transportation, storage and application. The roles of various additives have bothmutual promotion and sometimes conflicting. It was found that wetting agents play a key role in various types of additives inwaterborne coatings by orthogonal tests and the role of the order: wetting agents> defoamers>leveling agents; and wetting agents> high shear rheological agents> low cut thixotropicagents. Wetting agents also promote coalescents aid film formations, reducing the amount ofcoalescents.Addition of the nanoemulsions3810, the amount of coalescents may be reduced from6.5%to2.2%, accompanying with the VOC contents of waterborne coatings reduced from138g/L to45g/L,and the residual film TVOC (C6C16) also reduces from1332μg/m3to251μg/m3.
