In this study, images of1987(TM),1995(TM),2003/2004(CBERS),2012(HJ)from the Zhejiang Province were used to extract four periods of mainland coastlinesfrom1987to2012. Before that, interpretation keys of coastline were built.Furthermore, the extraction principles of coastline were put forward. We assessed ourresults with the908results, got information of the location, length and types of thefive periods coastlines and analyzed the characteristics. Specifically, we divided theZhejiang Province coastline to six parts(Jiaxing City, Hangzhou City, Shaoxing City,Ningbo City, Taizhou City and Wenzhou City) to analyze the historical coastlinechange based on the End Point Rate(EPR) and overlay analysis. Furthermore, withadditional data, we sought to dig out the causes of the coastline changes. Based on theabove research, a illustrational part of coastline was picked out and accessed coastalvulnerability with the analytic hierarchy process method. The main results are shownas follows:(1) The results reveals that artificial coastline is dominant, bedrock coastlinefollows, the lengths of the sandy coastline and the estuary coastline are almost equaland the silty mud coastline is the least. The length of artificial coastline increasesslowly, but between1987and1995, it decreased. Changes rates of the silty mudcoastline fluctuate; bedrock coastline becomes discontinuous.(2) Most parts of the mainland coastline of Zhejiang Province accrete andonly a few parts were eroded. The land area increased1030.49km2, had a net gain of1023.77km2and the rate was increasing. The changes were uneven timely andspacely. These places changed severely: Qian tang Jiang Estuary, San men Bay, JiaoJiang Estuary, west coast of the Le qing Bay-Ou Jiang Estuary-Fei yun Estuary andAo Jiang estuary. Change rates deduced successively from the north to the south.(3) The coastline changes of Zhejiang Province are influenced mainly bybuilding industrial park, port, boatyard and breeding pool which are human activities, and by estuarine runoff and sediment, landform, geology, water power which arenature factors. (4) Assessment of the vulnerability indicate that52.3%of the pickedcoastline is low-vulnerability or less-low-vulnerability which located along Xi sanZha to Yong Jiang Estuary;25.2%of that is mid-vulnerability; and22.5%ishigh-vulnerability or more-high-vulnerability, located along Yuyao to Xisan Zha.
