Clothing,food,shelter,communication is the four basic elements which we depend on tosurvive and develop ourselves. Among them, dress plays an vital important role in it. TheChinese clothing culture has been developing together with Chinese civilization and it is throughbeautiful clothing that China gets its great reputation of the kingdom of dress. Clothing iscomposed of the following three basic elements: colour, design and fabrics among which colorsare playing a very important role. As an important means of dyeing in Chinese ancient clothing-making, plant dyeing is the first thing we should pay attention to when studying ancient costumeculture. In numerous clothing color, red enduring in ancient costumes. The ancient Chinesepeople adore red and give it some special emotions. Therefore, red plant dye is widely used anddeveloped in ancient times.Logwood, safflower and madder are typical red plant dye.Amongthem,Logwood dyeing is not only easy to operate but also bright-colored and cheap,so it’s morepreferred by people. Logwood dyeing plays a very important role in red plant dyes. This paperwill take logwood dyeing for an example to study the red plant dyes, dyeing technique, theprinciple of color-using and the meaning of colors.By doing this,I hope to help people ro have adeep understanding of traditional Chinese culture and master the special meaning of colors inculture and to lay a theoretical foundation for inheriting,carrying forward and innovating ourculture.
