Transportation fleets and commercial freight trucks play an important role inChina’s overall energy consumption and CO2emissions in the transportation sector. Tobetter understand the transportation’s role in China’s overall energy consumption, thisstudy designed a conceptual model to illustrate the relationship between China’seconomy, energy, environment, and transportation sectors. This study also reviewed models in the literature that were used to calculate energydemand (fuel consumption) and CO2emissions for road freight in China. From thisresearch, it was clear that three main factors were considered in all of the models:vehicle population, vehicle travel distance, and fuel consumption rate. What was nottaken into account in any of these studies however was the distance utilization rate(DUR), and whether the freight trucks were loaded, partially loaded, or empty whencalculating fuel consumption. As a result, this report proposed a model that wouldinclude all of these factors. To calculate road freight fuel consumption and CO2emissions in China, this studydefined three scenarios (low, medium and high) for partially loaded trucks. Unlike otherstudies, this study considered truck load factors, especially partial load, for calculatingtruck fuel consumption and CO2emissions in China. Considering these new factors inthe calculation substantially impacted on the overall results.
