In the20th century Peking Opera are mainly flourishing in three major areas of Beijing,Tianjin and Shanghai. There are words saying "Study drama in Beijing, be a star in Tianjin, make money in Shanghai." The opera in both Beijing and Tianjin areas is usually called Jing Style and the opera in Shanghai is referred as Hai Style. The Hai Style is different from Jing Style not only in repertoire, style, makeup, stage scenery, etc., but also obviously in the fashion design of the opera. The traditional Jing Style Peking Opera is considered with higher social status than Hai Style. However, in today’s society, both styles has improve their communication and learn from each other, one of the great elements is to study the unique design features and style in costumes. The evolution of the female role costumes plays a pivotal role in thedevelopment of the Hai Style costumes.As Peking Opera costumes developing up to now, it could perfectly satisfy the need of stage performance in its’ mature years, though there’re still spaces of development in details. On the other hand, many thoughts of designing deepen gradually without theoretical summarization. After Chinese economic reform, more and more costumes design in new plays are further and further away from the principle and ideology of original Hai style. Not further exploringthe internal reason of the evolution, the costumes of these new plays only reflect the externalthoughts of Hai style. As the problems of costumes in new plays becoming more and more serious, it has to be urgent for us to figure out how to use the original Hai style ideology to improve the new costumes design of Peking Opera and even other traditional operas.
