With the rapid development of the Location-based Services (LBS), there are moreand more mobile GIS (Geograthic Information System) applications coming into thepublic’s life, one type of which is developed for the public transport. Currently, Serverand Desktop based GIS technique has been widely applied in the field of publictransport. But research on the GIS application based on mobile platform has juststarted, and the problem is lacking an application framework which was accepted bypublic in this filed. This article is trying to meet the needs of the public transport, aswell as to raise the developing efficiency and quality of GIS applications for the publictransport based on the mobile platform. Combined with the latest mobile GISdeveloping technique and advanced concepts of software engineering, a reusable GISapplication framework of the public transport based on the mobile platform ispresented.This article first analyzes the field of public transport, as well as makes thedomain analysis and requirement analysis of the GIS applications for the publictransport based on the mobile platform. Then combined with the key techniques andcharacters of these applications, the architecture of the application framework ispresented. After that, two application framewroks of the client and the server areconstructed. With considering the contents and characters of two frameworks, acomplete application framework is presented.In this paper, the mobile platform adopts Android which is open source andpopular, and Esri’s ArcGIS platform which is proven technique and high market shareis adopted as Geographic Information System. According to the characters of Androidand ArcGIS, a GIS application framework for the public transport based on Androidand ArcGIS platform is presented. Then, an android app named HandBUS is designedand programmed on the basis of this framework. Finally, this article conclude that theframework proposed here is structured, reusable, and meets the needs of applications inthis field. Furthermore, these applications possess good operating experience.
