The heterogeneity of geographical models was found in various aspects, such as operating environment, structure, grammar and semanteme, which create a barrier to model integration. Existing popular methods of geographic model integration can be summarized as model base integration, integration of the way of modification/encapsulation, service integration and domanial model integrated standards. The majority of these methods focus on addressing the heterogeneous problem of models themselves. However, the nature of model integration should be the "Unified Communications" between models and data. Targeting at the integration of heterogeneous geographical models, starting with input/output data of geographical models, and employing the approach of Universal Data eXchange (UDX) which is proposed by our research group, this research designed a geographical model integration-oriented data exchange structure and a method of data exchange among geographical models. The proposed method was verified through building the prototype system for data exchange in geographical models. The core research context and results are as follows:(1) Requirements of data exchange for geographical model integration:through a careful analysis of the geographical model, data and the objective of model integration, a final solution that adopting UDX-based data exchange method to address model integration was proposed.(2) Data exchange mechanism of geographical models:recalling geographical model data and existing methods of data exchange in the geographic domain, summarizing the laws of geographic model data exchange, and proposed the data exchange mechanism of geographical model; by summarizing the characteristics of UDX, a solution of geographical model data exchange expressed by UDX was proposed.(3) Geographical model integration-oriented configurable data exchange methods: based on the consistent expression of UDX, a user-configurable, scalable and heterogeneous geographical model integration-oriented data exchange structure is designed. Data exchange is realized through the UDX-based configuration statements of geographical model data exchange, and the complex code of data exchange can be shielded. In addition, through enabling the flexible configuration and expansion, the exchanging problem of multiple and heterogeneous data in geographical model integration can be property addressed.(4) Geographical model integration-oriented prototype system of data exchange:a prototype system for the data exchange of geographical models was developed, on the basis of the exchange mechanism of geographical model data and configurable structure of data exchange. A case study was implemented by taking the integration of China Sea Tide Model and POM hydrodynamic model as an example. Configuration statements were used for the exchanges of spatial references, unit dimensionless and data structure of model data. Finally, the exchange of model data was realized and heterogeneous models were integrated. The feasibility and practicality of the model integration-oriented configurable data exchange method was verified and confirmed.
