China opened its market to foreign banks from2006. Along with the fast growth ofChinese economic, the income of Chinese citizen has been significantly increased.China has been considered as one of the target markets for foreign banks expandingretail banking business. And Chinese banks also consider retail banking business astheir major business.HSBC is one of the foreign banks, and expanding retail banking business in China.HSBC wins customers’ trusts by providing high quality banking services. This papertakes HSBC as a sample, giving analyses about HSBC’s development of retail bankingbusiness in China these years. This paper also gives analyses about HSBC’sdevelopment environment, industry competition and major competitors in China.The paper compares HSBC with other Chinese banks and foreign banks, to showHSBC retail banking business’ strengths, weaknesses, outside opportunities and threats.Base on the analyses, this paper gives the standpoint, that is, the goal of HSBC retailbanking business is “to be the leader in retail banking business within foreign banks inChina”. And the development strategies and suggestions for HSBC retail bankingbusiness have also been given.
