Foreign banks in China who accomplished transformation from affiliated agencies to locally-incorporated foreign ones in 2007, and since then, they have gained the rapid development. Almost at the same time, shareholding reform of our state-owned commercial banks were ready to complete. It is not hard to see that, one hand state-owned banks was improving the internal structure to adapt themselves to the international financial market, on the other hand, they need face strong competition with foreign banks caused by opening the Chinese financial market.Based on the analysis of the macro, middle and micro environment of HSBC, a foreign bank operating in China, using M&A theory, strategic management theory and core-competence theory, investigating and studying its management strategies for Chinese market to acknowledge its strategy implementation and strategic characteristics, and conclude its operating results, as well as problems, even trying to make some management suggestions, which are of great significance to us. Because of favorable environment and its own advantages, HSBC expanded scale and occupied the market through M&A and marketing strategy. And meanwhile emphasizing localization strategies and brand strategy, so that it got some publicity for its brand and achieved remarkable benefit. But these strategies also bring some problems,such as high cost and high-barrier service. So go-out Chinese banks should carefully pick up targets, focus on the partial marketing, promote internationalization based localization, as well as attach importance brand culture. In addition, our banks need continue to perfect the structure of corporate governance, combine talent introduction with personnel management and training, do more in intermediary business innovation, to speed up internationalization.
