Study On Potato Industry Competitiveness And Influencing Factors In Gansu Province

With the rapid development of potato processing industry, potato is gradually shifting from traditional food crops into economic crops with remarkable benefits in China. Gansu Province has rich potato varieties and suitable climate for potato planting, therefore potato industry has become a competing industry in Gansu. Potato industry is one of the most promising industries with prominent advantage and characteristics in the process of agricultural industrialization in Gansu. It is also weigh significantly in increasing farmer’s income, driving rural regional economy development and ensuring food security. Therefore, it has become a very important task to enlarge and strengthen the potato industry in order to promote economic development of Gansu.Chapter one of this paper introduces the research background, research significance, literature reviews, contents and methods etc. Chapter two elaborates the related theories for research. Based on the understanding of agricultural general situation in Gansu province, Chapter three, using SWOT analysis method, analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Gansu potato industry. Chapter four, based on building indicators for potato industry competitiveness evaluation, using statistical data and factor method, evaluates the comprehensive competitiveness of Gansu potato industry among China’s19main potato growing areas. In Chapter five, based on the qualitative analysis of factors influencing the competitiveness of Gansu potato industry, the paper measures the strengths of different influencing factors using data from field work and expectation algorithm. In the last chapter, this paper concluded problems of Gansu potato industry in its competitiveness and influencing factors, and put forwards various suggestions and solutions.The study showed that Gansu potato planting has obvious advantages in the aspects of cultivate area and production amount, however, significant disadvantages such as output level and input in agricultural production are also existed. Gansu was ranked14th in terms of the competitiveness of potato industry among19major potato producing areas in China. Deep analysis shows that the competitiveness of Gansu potato industry competitiveness is influenced by many factors, on the resource endowments side, backward production and storage technology, insufficient investment in production; in aspect of industry organization structure, weak deep processing ability, unsound marketing system, professional association organization imperfection and backward brand construction:in industry environment aspect, incompatible development with related industries and inappropriate potato policy implementation etc. Finally, this paper put forward related suggestions for enhancing Gansu’s potato industry competitiveness, including:1) the first suggestion is to increase potato research funds investment through various ways;2) the second is to improve industrial organization level of Gansu potato industry, mainly through developing the leading enterprises of Gansu potato industry, strengthening its producing and marketing information service, and playing a leading role of potato industry association;3) the third is to build a better environment for potato industry development, mainly strengthening the building of infrastructure in main potato growing areas and adding subsidy policy for potato seeds.In this paper, the modeling of potato industry competitiveness evaluation helps deepen the theoretical research of potato industry competitiveness. In addition, the measurement of different influencing factors using expectation arithmetic shows that the environment for industry development has the biggest impact on competitiveness of Gansu potato industry. The results of the research could contribute to decision-making process when setting potato industry development policies in Gansu province.
