It supportsthe c ity’s d evelopment, af fects an d to som e exten t ev en dete rmines the city’ sexpansion, operating efficiency and residents’ living qualities. The urban area is theheart of the traf fic system, and distributio n center of any city. If an analogy wouldbe drawn b etween the traffic system and bl ood vessels, then traf fic jam for a citywould be a blood clot for a human. T raffic jam will greatly comprom ise thetransportation system, leading to inefficient operation of a city. It is why traffic jamis called arterial sclerosis.Urban traf fic has alw ays caught peopl e’s attention. Along with China’ saccelerating urbanization process, s everal issues arise. Since some mature cities inthe world have already faced and s olved similar problems during their urbanizatio n,we can draw inspirations from their practice to solve our issues. The purpose of this study is to understa nd the design and implem entation of theurban traffic system during fast development by analyzing the evol ution of the urbantraffic system of some metropolitan areas. Lessons learned through this process willthen facilitate our traf fic problem solvi ng in our urbanization process. T ianjinBinhai New Area was s elected as the subject, and several issues on its traffic systemhave been revealed. The public transpor tation system falls behind the urbanizationprocess, leading to over-burden; traf fic network and the infrastructure needsimprovement; trad itional driving h abits; environmental and noise pollutions. Aseries of remedy measures were then put forth. In this article, several m ethods including comparative analysis, com prehensiveanalysis and case analysis were integrated into analyzing process. The study wasdivided into four parts. First, the evolution of the urban traf fic system of severalmatured foreign cities, and the pros and cons of individual problem solving werestudied, followed by exploration of underl ying factors influencing the evolutionprocess to improve the understanding of our own system s. Lessons thus learnedwere then integrated into the discussion and improvem ent of current developm entstrategies of our urban traf fic system. Finally, based on the understanding of the urban traffic system of T ianjin Binhai New Area, several im provements were putforth. |
