The History Of Western Flower In Shanghai County

During one hundred years from Shanghai became the concession in theMid-19th Century till the liberation in modern China, the Western flowers(e.g. carnation cut flowers and potted cyclamen) and the local flowers (e.g.Yin Liu cut flowers and potted chrysanthemum) played a leading role in themodern flower history in Shanghai, and they witnessed the prosperity andunrest after Shanghai was opened as a trade port.In the first30years after liberation of Shanghai, the flower industryfluctuated much, and this time the Western flowers met the hardestdevelopmental time in Shanghai. After Reform and Opening-up of China inthese rapidly developmental30years, the flower industry has developed to asunrise industry in agricultural field in China. Shanghai was no exception andthere was no outstanding boundary between Western flowers and localflowers any more. After China took part in WTO, flower trades has beengetting more and more frequent with more orders to come and higherrequirements on professional manufacturing on flowers. At the same time, Shanghai flower industry, represented by the previous Shanghai County, isundertaking a decline in both R&D and market share.This paper helps to sort out the flower industry history of MinhangDistrict (formerly called Shanghai County) by the certain species of flowers,defined period of time and administrative division, and tries to make arational conclusion on the development rules, and to explore the internal andexternal factors. So that it can help to find out a new direction for the flowerindustry revival which help the modern flower industry develop in a betterand more stable way.
