Whether building a new plant or rebuilding and expanding the original plant, the facilitylayout design is needed. Facility layout design is a continuous activity, it not only affects thecurrent running status of the enterprise, but also decides the adaptability to the futurechanges and needs. To compare the scientific facility layout and the poor one, there are notmany differences in the initial investments of the construction, but the different effects inprocess will be very obvious. Thus, the research of facility layout design and optimizationhas the extremely important practical significance and applied value. This paper takes agearbox assembly workshop as an example. According to the problems, such as inadequacyof the capacity and storage room, dirty and disorder surroundings of worksite, this paperstudies the workshop layout optimization problem.Firstly, the paper summarizes the domestic and the foreign researches about the facilitylayout design and plan evaluation, analyses the advantages and disadvantages of the currentmethods on layout design and evaluation. According to the conditions of the gearboxassembly workshop, this paper determines the research method and writing train of thought.Secondly, the paper introduces the status and problems of the gearbox assembly plant.Based on two types of the typical products, by analyzing the logistic relation of the operatingdepartments, calculating the closeness extent of the operating departments, drawing theoperation departments’ position relevant figures, we finally obtain several reasonable layoutplans.Thirdly, the paper sets up the optimized model on workshop layout. The objectivefunction is the minimization of the logistics cost, and the constraints are consisted of spacingconstraint, boundary constraint and fixed constraint. In order to make the optimizationresults more realistic, the paper defines the formulas about distances of material handlingbased on the different circumstances. By applying the genetic algorithm, the initialpopulation concludes several layout plans getting from the SLP, and the angle of equipment layout is considered in the coding schemes. MATLAB software has been used to run theprogram, which get two pre-selected plans.Finally, the paper gives the evaluation about the two pre-selected plans based on linearweighted method. The index system of evaluation includes quantitative index which gettingfrom the results of the eM-Plant model and qualitative index which getting from thequestionnaires. At last, the final optimal layout plan is given.
