Current internet has a challenge to its response time with the development of applications. To solve this problem, increase bandwidth may be a solution, but it could not get good bandwidth utilization as the delay’s influence. WAN acceleration technology has been suggested to address this problem in current network hierarchy in recent years. In the paper, as one important kind of WAN acceleration technologies, Parallel TCP is proposed to address this problem in current network hierarchy. An acceleration gateway system is designed and implemented for WAN application in double-end acceleration mode. This system is designed and implemented using technologies of block I/O and multithreading. It has the functions of access control of session, synchronization control of session, flow control of session interception, processing and transmission of application data, exception process of tunnel and so on. Besides of safety and reliability, the system achieves acceleration of data transmission via WAN. Finally, system performance is tested on test-bed in laboratory for applications of Web page access and file transmission. The results indicate that this system reduces internet response time and improves transmission performance. For further verification of transmission performance, parallel TCP technology is extended to the system of WAN acceleration platform. In order to be compatible, a new parallel TCP tunnel is designed and implemented using technology of I/O reuse and event drive mechanism. Adaptive data distribution and adjustment of the number of parallel TCPs are achieved in parallel TCP tunnel. Finally, system performance is tested and analyzed on test-bed in laboratory.
