Network management systems should possess comprehensiveness, effectiveness and integrity as the development of IT advances, the coverage of network expands and the all-compatible network era imparts new meaning to the management of networks. On the other hand, network devices and their types are many and various, but products made by different manufacturers have to be managed as a whole; hence the need for a network management system equipped with a unified interface becomes urgent. Currently manufacturers in and outside China have not reached consensus on interface selection, which causes failure to have the various products centrally managed. For the management of all devices in a network, an open-type network management system is indispensable.The formula for Type-Ill transponder was adopted for the open-type network management system according to the previous researches on HFC systems as well as the HFC model. The Open-Type Network Management System is based on the SNMP-protocol, and the surveillance of device parameters and warning of abnormal data are realised with the help of the NET-SNMP platform. This device is directly controlled by the SNMP proxy (transponder), and it can be included in the open-type network management system simply by connecting the electric or serial interface of the target device to the proxy port.The suggestion of transferring the serial port to solve interface problems was adopted on account of compatibility issues in current network management systems. The proxy port realises the conversion of protocols, and command data flows are sent via the serial interface. After reading and analysing various literature regarding network management techniques, the situation and devices of open-type network management are studied in detail, and preliminary analysis and design are also carried out for the management application of relevant devices. The research on the proxy interface in terms of resolution and formation of SNMP messages provides ground for the SNMP operation on the NET-SNMP platform, i.e. GET, SET etc. The core value of this Dissertation is to unravel issues such as proxy extension, realisation of MIB tables and submission of Trap-messages etc by introducing key technologies in open-type network management systems, which are beyond the ability of HFC network managers.Finally the whole open-type network management system is emulated and analysed as well. Future research proposals concerning the standardisation issues in protocol conversion of this system and the management of multiple proxy interfaces are also put forward.
