This thesis proposes a design approach of digitized intelligent drilling rig fuel tanks tofuel management problems in drilling companies, with reality situations of the drilling teamsin mind. Currently, many drilling companies still adopt the traditional way of fuelmanagement which does not have accurate measurements on the fuel consumption. Thissituation has led to abnormal fuel consumption such as the wasting and lost of fuel. Also,there is no accurate method for measuring the amount of fuel received in the drilling team anddue to environmental conditions and human operations, the measurement error is relativelylarge, thus making unnecessary fuel loss in the fuel supply segment. According to these, wemade a few improvements on the existing fuel tank and designed a corresponding fuelmonitoring system based on the characteristics of the drilling team’s fuel storage and usage.We optimized the structure of existing fuel tanks in two aspects:(1) The fuel tanks utilizesquare-shaped body design resulting a cuboid in the interior space which facilitates theaccuracy of fuel measurements.(2) We improves the way fuel tanks supply oil by eliminatingthe elevated lift tank and using MCUs to control the air compressor which provides stable oilsupply pressure by pumping compressed air into the fuel tank. The MCUs uses fuzzy PIDalgorithm as its control algorithm.Drilling teams often need to changed their operation locations, therefore there areuncertainties in the fuel tanks’ inclinations. The error can be quite large simply by measuringpressure using the pressure transmitter, calculating liquid level which is then translated intofuel mass. For this we designed a method that can accurately measure fuel in the fuel tanks.We use the single chip microcomputer as the main control unit and measure the inclination ofthe fuel tank through Inclination Gathering Units and determine the liquid level in the fueltank through Level Gathering Units. Then we calculate the volume and mass of the fuelwithin the fuel tank based on these measurements using Cayley-Menger determinant.Ultrasonic flowmeter is installed on the oil outlet of the fuel tank to measure fuelconsumption and monitoring equipments are installed on the diesel generator and dieselengine to ensure accurate measurements of fuel usage.We use configuration software to design software for monitoring center which receivethrough GPRS networks the monitoring data from each drilling team. Real-time and historydata of each drilling teams’ fuel usage can be viewed through the software and these willprovide reliable data for the drilling company to cut back cost and increase profit.
