If traditional films were combined with arts and technologies, it is networktechnology that made the development of films had the second leap. We could namethem network film which were made by digital technology and published through theinternet. The network film develops so rapidly that it has made remarkableachievements from it was born, just in less than twenty years. Not only provides newdevelopment modes and platforms for the film industry, but it also makes the types andways of films more and more plentiful. Compared with the rapid development of thenetwork film, the study of this new things is lagging behind in academia, for there areonly several papers on it, even no monograph. Therefore, this paper will discuss it fromthree aspects: At first, defining the network film, describing its histories and types.Secondly, discussing the readiness of the audience, and studying the significance of this.At last, pondering the lacking of the audience from the view of the culture.There is no exact definition of the network film in academia so far, so somescholars call it as micro-film, new media film or mobile movies etc.. The authorbelieves that, for the shortage of techniques and capitals, the video lengths of mostnetwork films are short(less than twenty minutes), but with the development of thisindustry, this must be changed, it is not proper to call it micro-film. The same to thename of new media film and mobile movies because there are more and moredevices could play the network films which were published by the internet as theadvancements of electronics and communications. The author gives a general definition:They are the narrative dynamic audio-visual arts which were published just in thenetwork, existing in the digital devices, produced by the language of the film.After the infancy and the growing period, the maturity of the network film willcome soon. For the limit of techniques, the network films were created by professionalteams in infancy. In this period, interactive movies, one of the most important types ofnetwork films, were created with revolutionary changes. It has changed the viewingmode, when the audience could combine the film’s plot with some specialized software.In the growing period, the network films are created by the author, and this brings asmall peak of film creation. With the support of professional teams and the entry ofbusiness, there are more and more good products of many types. It is the InteractiveNetwork Movies, Original Online Movies, Online Advertising Movies that correspondsto the three periods of network film. After the development of network film, the author thought the biggest differencebetween network films and traditional films is whether the traditional audience couldparticipate. Compared to the traditional films, the network films make the audiencecould take part in the processes of producing and publishing. By the conveniences oftaking part in the producing of network films, people create new ways of expression,oppose the authorities, and promote the development of the film industry.With the increasing participative in the network films, the culture of young peoplewas expressed. But there are three more aspects that we should pay attention to. At first,in the consuming society which was led by visual culture, what is dispelled is the voiceof Elites, instead of the secular one. Secondly, diverse Online Advertising Movies havebeen inspiring the potential desires for consumption of the audience. At last, thedemocracy and justice claimed in the network media is not real. It is just the false onecovered by the freedom and equality of consumption. Thus, the network film may bethe new way of stimulating the desires for consumption.The author believes that the audience participation in network movies is based onthe particularity of the network media. So network media may be the new way to studythe participatory of the network movie audience.
