1928is a special year in the history of modern Chinese literature. Academia usually takes it as the starting point of the second decade of the modern Chinese literature. The outbreak of "the debate of revolutionary" in this year not only made a great stir at that time, but also influenced the direction of literary history largely. Modern Fiction(现代小说)was born in this particular era. Modern Fiction was edited by Ye Lingfeng and Pan Hannian, issued by Modern Bookstore, founded in January1928, ceased in March1930. There were only two years and two months. Its life was short, but the contents were abundant. There were inheritances of May4th literary scene about the thinking of life and society, blending of a variety of creation techniques, and pursuit of revolutionary tide... The revision event happened in1929especially added the richness to Modern Fiction. The split-new Modern Fiction changed not only the layout of the printed sheet but also the direction. The study on such periodical may only touch the tip of the iceberg, but is help for restoring the styles and features of the literary scene at that time more or less. The detailed description of the split-new Modern Fiction and the analysis on the causes of its change will let us see the emergence and development of the left-wing literature are not so pure and simple.Reviewing the whole story of Modern Fiction is the task of the beginning. This chapter will trace the cooperation of Ye Lingfeng and Pan Hannian back to the "little guys" time when they worked at the publishing department of Creation Society. The time laid the foundation for the two person’s future cooperation. After that is an introduction about the starting and revision of Modern Fiction. The second part is a study on Modern Fiction which hadn’t been revised. At that time it was fiction’s world. Creators did all they can, utilized a wide variety of techniques to describe love and life."Revolution" was the main theme of Modern Fiction which had been revised. Not only the new part publicized the sails of revolution, but the field of creation also showed that the revolutionary theme was becoming the only rhythm. However, the creation and the theory advocates on Modern Fiction which had been revised were not fully coordinated. These constitute the third part of the article. Finally, there is an analysis about the reasons of revision, which will expand from two aspects——the living space of the periodical and its editors.
