With the popularity and development of Internet, website has grown to become the quickest and most convenient channel of various industries advertising and transmitting information. The beautiful web design has a direct impact on the visual effect and propaganda of the web page, and yet words are the most important part in the web page. That needs web designers to design the web page with more beautiful fonts. However, only several kinds of web safe fonts could be used in web limited by the operating system and the font technology. In the same time, image replacement technology has some defects. So web application of font technology looks particularly important.Firstly, the paper analysed main English Web Fonts technologies including@font-face, Typeface.js, sIFR, Cufon and Google Font API, studied comparatively the principles, means of realization and the merits and demerits, and tested the web browser compatibility of each Web Fonts technology by Spoon Browser Sandbox. Finally, the support to Chinese Web Fonts of each technology was analysed by experiment.@font-face, Typeface.js and Cufon among them all can realize Chinese Web Fonts by testing. But the effect is not good, because the font files are so large that the speed of loading fonts is too slow and the web delay is too long.In view of the above problem, the paper gave two Chinese Web Fonts solutions obtaining on demand to solve the problem of excessive Chinese font files according to the particularity of Chinese fonts and special fonts used only by titles or logos and so on in the web. The first is only loading required font files from the server through CSS3@font-face. The second is extracting fonts’glyph information according to the principle of TrueType font and then using HTML5Canvas to draw required fonts.The paper built a real network environment, chose two kinds of Chinese fonts, did many experiments by changing word counts, and recorded the size of loading font files and the consumption of network traffic and time. The experiment results show that two proposed solutions obtaining on demand can significantly reduce the amount of data transmission in the network and solve effectively the problem that using Chinese Web Fonts in the web causes the web page to load too slowly.
