The Internet is the network architecture and technology emerged in the late of1970s, It was originally designed in the application environment based on transmission of text data.With the development of network, Internet is developing from the traditional single form of network gradually to the intelligent, multi-service composite network, in order to more effectively support different network users and meet the requirements of the diverse application quality of service. Because of the difference of the new emerging network applications and network application environment, it requires the network device with dynamic adaptability in order to meet the requirements of the rapid service deployment or expansion of different network users and diverse applications, and according to the difference of the network application environment, it can rapidly deploy the network switching services adapted.A new type of network device emerges as the times require. The subject of this research in this paper draws lessons from the virtual server. It makes a physical switch divided into several virtual switches, which have a plurality of logic separated, different control structures or forwarding service ability, through the use of software, hardware or software and hardware combination mode.First, this thesis introduces the technical background of Ethernet virtual switch. Ethernet entity Switch is sketched.This thesis also describes the working principle, work characteristics, switch method, function and the spanning tree protocol of the entity switch.Then, this thesis introduces the physical device virtualization and several models of the virtual device.Then two kinds of existing virtual Ethernet switches are described in detail: one is virtual switch based on stream packet switching, another is virtual switch based on main-subordinate role. The two kind of virtual switches take different virtual strategies:1:N and N:1. These strategies provide valuable ideas for the research of virtual switch based on Ethernet. At last, this thesis introduces the VLAN technology, the concept of VLAN, partitioning strategy and the way of the communication.After that, this thesis introduces the basic ideas, segmentation and isolation mechanism and overall process of the virtual switch, and the functions of entity switch are also simulated.This thesis determies the topology of the network established between virtual switches and puts forward the corresponding solution in order to solve the existing problems of the network topology.This solution not only eliminates the annular link of the two layers, but also retains the backup function of the link. At last, internal spanning tree protocol of the virtual switch system is designed in detail.Finally, this thesis uses OPNET simulation software to simulate the design scheme of virtual switch based on Ethernet. This thesis has designed two simulation scenarios. In the scene one, the virtual switches are not isolated. This paper simulates the span tree election of the network topology between the virtual switches inside of physical switch, failure recovery, data frames forwarding and Mac address mapping table maintenance. After the start of the virtual switch, the system will initialize according to the configuration.Then the system will run the spanning tree protocol in the topology structure established and optimize the network topology. At last, this thesis proves the feasibility of design scheme of the virtual switch based on Ethernet through the application example. In the scene two, the virtual switches are isolated. At last, this thesis proves the isolation of design scheme of the virtual switch based on Ethernet through the application example.
