With the appearance and continuous development of Internet of Things (IoT), Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), one of the key technologies in IoT, attracts more and more attention. Its unique advantages in flexibility, fault-tolerance, low power consumption and quick deployment, make WSN a bright future. However, there are also some inherent defects in WSN, such as power limitation, which is the fatal defect of WSN. While most wireless sensor networks are event-driven networks, sensor nodes need to be deployed very densely in the monitoring region in order to get satisfactory network coverage, high reliability and redundancy. Meanwhile, there is a high degree of spatial correlation among the densely deployed nodes. In some extent of compromising reliability, the high degree of spatial correlation between nodes can be took advantage of, combined with cluster routing method and MAC protocol based on the spatial correlation, to remove redundant information between nodes to the utmost extent. For doing so, energy consumption can be reduced, the performance of the entire wireless sensor networks can also be greatly improved, and then the lifetime of the network can be prolonged. This thesis focuses on the spatial correlation of nodes in wireless sensor networks. Firstly, the background of sensor networks is shortly introduced. And revolved about improving the efficiency of network energy usage, this thesis discusses how to make advantage of the spatial correlation. Then, the model of spatial correlation and the MAC protocols based on spatial correlation are further studied. Based on these theories study, a kind of routing protocol based on spatial correlation named BSC-RA is proposed, which is specific for large-scale random deployed wireless sensor networks. By simulated towards the classical clustering routing protocol-LEACH, BSC-RA protocol can effectively extend the network lifetime about15%. Finally, the proposed protocol and correlative MAC protocol are applied to the actual monitoring prototype system. The wireless sensor network monitoring prototype system based on the spatial correlation is coded and implemented.
