In overcoming the shortage of IPv4, the new network protocol IPv6can better adapt to the requirements of the development of the Internet. But it still need to experience a long transition stage of development for making IPv6network replace the existing IPv4network. Domestic and foreign institutions have carried out a lot of research in IPV6transition. IPv6transition has become an important research topic in network development. This paper first analyzes the theory of three major transition technologies. Then we discuss implementations of the dual-stack technology,6over4,4over6and NAT64.Finally we designed and implemented an IPv6transition router forwarding system on the basis of high-speed hardware forwarding router. We not only merge tunnel forwarding table into ordinary forwarding table but also devise a new the NAT64forwarding table to complete the address mapping. In the design of the routing table lookup we simplify the process of look-up with a new structure of forwarding table. In the forwarding function design, we use the pipeline technique to achieve the parallel execution of different operation which improves the efficiency of the IP packet forwarding processing. In this paper we first introduce the research status of IPv6transition, then analyses the function which transition routers need to implement. We come up with a design and implementation of the IPv6transition router in detail, and pointed out the existing difficulties in the design and solutions; In the end we describes the transition router functionality testing and performance testing and its results. We conclude the work we have done and present deficiencies of system and come up with direction of improvement.
