A very important prerequisite for telecom operators to provide users with high-quality services is to ensure the specifications and stability of its online network equipment. That is the device in the communication net-work complies with the regulatory requirements of the relevant protocols, and can provide stable services continuously. Thus communication net-work equipment need to go through rigorous testing to ensure the equip-ment specifications and stability. Protocol testing is an important part of which can regulate the consistency of the communication protocol between different devices, and ensure interoperability between equipment produced by different manufacturers.With the sustained and rapid development of communication and net-work technology, IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) has achieved the inte-gration of wireless and wired networks. It can provide effective manage-ment of network resources, and provide users with a more intelligent ser-vice, thus being the direction of next-generation network. With the large-scale commercial use of IMS, the related protocols have been modified several times. In order to ensure the normative and stability of business network, we need a large number of protocol tests for the related network equipment. So there is a need for an automated protocol testing tools to complete the test of different network devices, in particular the IMS net-work equipment.This paper first introduces the background knowledge of IMS and protocol testing. The main results of the research is the analysis and re-search of an open source testing tool Seagull, and the appropriate improve-ments according to the actual testing demand. First, the research include the analysis of test principle in the aspects of function and archi-tecture, and the analysis of the main modules which related to the testing process.Then, according to the actual test requirements and test experience, combined with the powerful feature of Seagull, the improvements reflected in three aspects, including the new function of multi-scene control, the new function of load model, and the optimize of network I/O performance.The main innovation of this topic is that through research and im-provement of open source testing tool Seagull, implement an automated testing tool in the actual production practice environment, which was scal-able, easy to operate and manage. The subject combined with the actual testing demand, taking full advantage of the main framework of the open-source testing tool and related functional modules, saved human resources and time resources significantly, and reduced the risk of the program de-velopment and implementation.
