Due to the emergence of video conferencing, interactive games and multimedia applications, leading to the growing demand of user for bandwidth. The traditional access methods are gradually unable to meet the growing demand for bandwidth. What’s more, the next generation network also has a higher bandwidth and throughput performance requirements for next-generation access network as a variety of data type and services exist in the network. Network coding is a promising technology to improve network throughput performance as well as increase bandwidth utilization, and it has been shown to have effect on optimization in optical access networks and wireless access networks. Say to the converged access network (Fiber and wireless converged), it is a very promising solution for the "last mile" access strategy, when combined with network coding technology, this converged access structure will make a big difference in optimizing the performance of next-generation access networks. This article first analyzes the key technologies of the next generation access networks, including next-generation optical access technology and next-generation wireless access technologies. By this way, we can understand the trend and the demand of the next generation access network. Then take the throughput-the key metric for evaluating network performance-as the entry for the optimization of network performance, and then introduced network coding technology by analyzing and exploring the application of network coding technology in the access network. In order to measure the performance of NC more accurately under the situation that diverse traffic flows exist in the network, the paper proposes a network coding performance metrics-Relative Traffic Gain (RTG), through simulation result, we can see that RTG can better reflect how the parameters influence on the performance of NC in different kind of traffic flows. In addition, a network coding method for optical and wireless converged network is proposed-PW-NC (Network Coding in PON with Wireless), and we here take the1:8PON with wireless access structure as an example to analyze the performance for PW-NC.The main content and results of this paper can be concluded as follows:1. Through studing on the key technologies in the next generation access networks, including next-generation optical access technology with next-generation wireless access technologies, we got the trends and prospects of optical and wireless converged access network, it is important for the research in the following part.2. Give research on Network coding technology in the access network to provide reference for network coding stratergy design in the next generation access network.3. Propose a new network coding performance metric:the Relative Traffic Gain(RTG). Several typical data models are selected for the simulation. Including the normal distribution, the Poisson distribution, Constant-Bit-Rate stream, the exponential distribution and Pareto distribution, and analyze the influence of parameters on the RTG. It is proved that Relative Traffic Gain is effective in evaluation network coding performance.4. A new network coding method for optical and wireless converged network is proposed:PW-NC (Network Coding in PON with Wireless). The simulation results show that PW-NC can achieve better optimization results.
