Optical access network oriented FTTH is able to overcome the bandwidth limits of traditional access network, but the structure of passive optical network (PON) is monotonous and low flexibility. Wireless Mesh network has high flexibility, low cost, easily management and many other advantages, which make it has huge potential for future development. The combination of PON and wireless mesh network can optimize the structure and improve the performance of the network, is a practical broadband access network solution. In this paper, we will focus on network availability protection in the combination of PON and wireless mesh network. This paper contains the following aspects:(1) Introduced the current research of PON and wireless mesh network technology, stated the limits of PON and wireless mesh network, research on the protective structures and mechanisms of PON network star, tree, bus and ring topology.(2) With analyzing and comparing a variety of protective structures, propose a flexible protection mechanisms applied to the PON which contains three flexible protection structure.(3) For wireless mesh network flexibility, propose a PON-based wireless mesh protecting method called WMN-OCO, improving the low flexibility of PON, and analysis two flexible protection structure in asingle hop, double hop and multi-hop structures (4) Creat the concept of flexible protection ring. Adopting a flexible mechanism to achieve flexible protection ring, can be achieved at low cost to full backup protection, and a effective way to expand the coverage of a single PON.(5) We use the analysis method based on occurrence probability of links failure the availability of modeling and the result of simulation shows the protective structure can effectively improve network availability.
