The Observer Weekly was an important platform for the liberal intellectuals in the middle and late1940’s. It started its publication in September,1946and was suspended in December,1948. During this time, China had experienced the period from the expected successful peace talks between KMT and the CPC to the outbreak of the civil war, and the Communist Party of China achieving lots of advantages. In this course, the liberal intellectuals established publications one after another to express their propositions. In order to achieve peace and democracy, the liberal intellectuals were called upon to be united to become the third force.This paper tries to focus on the Observer Weekly’s contents about KMT, CPC and the third force, based on the reading of its114issues. Then it analyzes the evolution of the three kinds of forces presented in the Observer Weekly through the statistics. Furthermore, this paper researches on the evolution of the liberal intellectuals’attitudes and ideologies beyond the words on the basis of the evolution of the Observer Weekly’s contents. At the same time, this article will explain these evolutions mentioned above combining with the historical background to show the mentality evolution of the liberal intellectuals.
