With the rapid development of the industry, more and more automatic instruments are implemented into the engineering. After meeting the needs of process automation, we more and more hope that automatic instruments could play important role in safety instrument system. In the meanwhile, we are facing new problem:how can we estimate whether these instruments could work in the moment of truth. The function safety estimate the capability of instruments that they can fulfill the requirements of safety through management, estimate, testing. Instrument manufacturers and system integrator abroad have already recognized the importance of function safety, and they have paid a lot of energy in it. Function safety just starts in China, many key techniques need to be researched. So, the research on function safety assessment technique is helpful for independent innovation ability promotion, and with positive reality and engineering significance.This paper is to describe the function safety assessment plan of the intelligent pressure transimitter through the discussion of function safety theory. The hardware assessment mainly focus on circuit analysis, gaining of average failure rate, structure restrain. The technique used for assessment including:reliability prediction, failure mode effect analysis. The assessment of software mainly follow up the software lifecycle, estimate the software function safety level according to the requirements of different phase in software lifecycle. The important points are:function safety idea in early stage of design phase, choose of coding language; After the design, test on coding rule, software unit test and integrity test. After the assessment of hardware and software, an inspection and testing is necessary. Test parameters obtained from function safety requirements of intelligent pressure transmitter.The result of hardware assessment, software assessment, type test shows that the product meet the requirements of safety integrity level2(SIL2). The intelligent pressure transmitter can be applied in industrial process widely.
