The functions and features of the wireless sensor network, such as automatic data collection and wireless transmission are well adapted to the variety of data acquisition on spacecrafts. Wireless sensor network system on spacecraft is widely usedin the world, as the representative of the United States, has made very great results in the research on thespecific application of WSN on spacecraft. Nowadays,wireless sensor network technology on spacecraft in our country still lags behind the United States and Russia and other space powers, but at the same time the development of China’s space industry is very rapidly, therefore, wireless sensor network technology on the spacecraft is a hot spot of China’s aerospace technology at this stage.In this paper, a protocol for data gathering wireless sensor networks is designed according to the common sensor data on the spacecraft, which has the ability to automatically adapt to star, tree and chain three network topologies. This wireless sensor network protocol is applied by programming for sensor nodes and sink node.In this protocol, the sink node will judge the topology by the hop count information of all sensornodes and the number of its single-hop child nodes information,and then select the appropriate protocol to the network. In this paper a number of tests is put on the network protocol, including the ability to discover the network topology and choose the correct function, time cost of networking, the time from networkorganized successfully to the sink-node firstly receive data completely, multi-hop transmission lostpacket rate, the function of adding new nodes andtime cost of re-establish when new node changes the network topology. The analysis of the test results prove that the network protocol designed in this paper can accurately determine the topology and the5hop packet loss rate in a multi-hop transmission is still about6%, and it is also good at receive a new node. So the protocol well applies data gathering WSN on spacecraft.The network protocol has the ability toautomatically adapt to topology, the sensor nodes will be laid in the monitoring region when the spacecraft assembly, whenthe spacecraft needs to start data acquisition afterit is lifted off or into orbit, the sensor nodes and sink nodewill be powered up, then automatically dicover the topology and networking,ande then begin data collection.For different data, it only need to set the frequency of collection and select the appropriate sensor, the it can meet the demand.so the protocolhas a highly modular application.
