In recent years, various wide gamut displays, such as laser displays, developed fast. They have much better performances than traditional displays. Contrast to traditional displays, wide gamut displays improved a lot in color coverage rate. Because they adopt high saturated primary colors. The color coverage rate of PAL displays is about33.2%, while that of laser displays could be1.9times bigger than it. So they can display many colors that traditional displays can’t, therefore satisfy the human need of big display color capability. Since the current standards are based on traditional displays. If wide gamut displays use the traditional video signals, there will be color distortion. Because the differences of primary colors. To solve the problem, color gamut expansion mapping is very important.This paper takes laser TV for example, discussed wide gamut displays gamut expansion mapping to solve the problem. After the introduction of color science and gamut expansion mapping theories, three gamut expansion method are proposed. This paper discussed Gamut Expansion Method Based on Saturation in CIE1931[34] and proposed a method to decrease the computation. This paper discussed the adoption of color spaces and advised to adopt CIE1976UCS. For high luminance color, this paper divided their gamut especially according to their gamut. For skin colors, this paper proposed a skin color detection method in CIE1976UCS basing on the current skin color detection methods and our experiment results. A lot of discussions, experiments and analysis are did to make sure the method is accurate. Experiment results show it is an efficient method. The method is not only easy for hardware implementation, but also has reference value for skin color detection research.
