Visual plant is a new science, which uses computer technology to analog plant architectureas well as the process of growth and development in the three-dimensional space. Visual plantabstracts out human’s sensory impression for real plants in the real world by mathematicalmethods as a series of awareness for plant morphology. It helps human research in-depth on theplant’s essential construction and growth pattern. After decades of development, research forvirtual plant has made certain achievements, and the modeling method has gradually improved.It becomes a hot research in computer field gradually. By constructing virtual plant, we cananalyze the relationship between plant growth, crop yield, intrinsic gene control of plant,hormones regulation and plant morphological changes quantitatively and systematically. Thenwe can provide reference and guidance for designing new varieties of plants, worms test,fertilizer test, and so on.But, at this stage, the performance capabilities of most virtual plant model are weak andstay in the level of simulation, and the research on the change of flowers, fruits, roots, leaves andother organs in the growth process is still insufficient. Because plant leaves are the major placefor plant conducting photosynthesis, transpiration, and nutrient conduction, and have animportant influence on plant’s growth and development, crop yields, and so on. So, this subjectselected plant leaves as research object. This paper proposes the construction method ofthree-dimensional plant leaf based on the functional characteristics. This paper aims to achievesimulation of the construction of virtual leaf which embodies the basic morphologicalcharacteristics of plant leaves and the morphological changes in the growth process of plantleaves, and to simulate the natural growth process of the plant leaves on the physiologicalecology.To achieve the above objectives, this paper uses the construction of leaf outline which canembody the basic morphological characteristics as the starting point. This paper conductedin-depth research on the construction of3D plant leaf growth model by the definition andextraction of functional characteristics, proposing of cubic B-spline curve constructing bladecontour algorithm based on the constraints of functional characteristics and combining particleprojectile motion with double-spring model.The main work and innovations in this paper are summarized as follows:1. In this paper, based on the collection, classification and management of plant leafcontour’s characteristic data, we extract and definite the function of leaf contour space featureswhich can both perform leaf contour and describe leaf contour in building leaf contour model in the process of constructing leaf contour model, and get combination of functional features whichcan identify leaf contour. This paper uses the acquired functional characteristics as the constraintcondition of the modeling algorithm, which effectively increases the description of the detailedcharacteristics of leaf contour.2. This paper proposes an algorithm which uses cubic B-spline curve based on thefunctional characteristics to build leaf profile. The algorithm combines the characteristics ofcubic B-spine curve, and uses the combination of functional characteristics to get basic valuepoint, and fits fairing cubic B-spine curve which can meet functional constraints andapproximate value point, and reverses control point, and gets leaf contour model which canembody the basic leaf contour characteristics, and effectively increases the control andinteractive adjustment for the edge of leaf profile.3. Based on time functional characteristics, this paper proposes an construction method of aparticular leaf dynamic growth model, which selects appropriate growth equation to fitparameters for the single space functional characteristics of plant leaf, and then gets change rulemodel of the space functional characteristics in the plant leaf growth cycle. It reflects themorphological changes in the growth process of plant leaves effectively.4. This paper proposes leaf deformation method based on physical model, which combinesthe change of leaf contour’s characteristics with physical model’s critical characteristics, anduses correlated algorithms of mature physical model, and realize the lateral and longitudinaldeformation of the leaf model. It effectively increases the authenticity of virtual leaf.The experimental results show that the research and innovation of this topic can effectivelyreflect the morphological characteristics of plant leaf and the dynamic changes of leafmorphology in the growth process. So, it has a certain practicality and prospects fordevelopment.
