In view of the traditional mechanical extensometer test the fiber optic cable will make the low measurement accuracy and produce large errors, this paper put forward a new strain measurement system based on digital image processing technology, which does not need to contact with the tested fiber optic cable.This paper describe detailed development overview and measurement principle of digital image processing technology, introduce the emphasis contents of research projects; Completed the design of the hardware and software according to the system Overall design philosophy and measurement principle. Purchased the hardware equipment accordance with the system technical parameters, mainly include digital cameras, optical lens and illumination light source etc. In the software part, the system realize the non-contact measurement of the cable tensile strain by using the image processing toolbox of MATLAB, this method can only deal with the static image. Experimental content is using the camera to record the image of the optical cable which are being tested; experimental target is calculate the amount of displacement between the two marked points on the optical cable, thereby obtaining the tensile strain of optic cable. Finally, the experiment obtained the data from the measurement of optic cable tensile strain. Experimental results show that the measurement method of this the system is feasible.
