In recent years, access networks that use optical fiber as its transmission medium have becomethe best solution in the field of fixed access networks for its huge capacity long transmissiondistance and good traffic transparency. With the development of the transport network, highnetwork survivability, multiple sevice level and quality of serice are the key concerns of thenext-generation optical networks. With the huge bandwidth of optical fiber, any component or linkfailure may lead to a big impact to users or operators, which make the survivability and faultmanagement of the optical network extremely important. Introducing the GMPLS (GeneralizedMulti-Protocol Label Switching) technology into the access network achieves the goal of intelligentcontrol and management, and it also helps the fusion of the access network and the core network. Inaddition, this technique has attacted a lot of concerns of the communications sector at home andabroad.First, this thesis has analyzed the WDM-PON technology and its GMPLS related architecture, and try to implement the function of fault management by introducing the link managementprotocol of the GMPLS into WDM-PON. Second, some faults of physical layer in the optical accessnetwork are analyzed, and also several methods of common link detection are analysed andcompared. This paper presents a new mechanism that using the double-end module parameterdetection method to position the failure of the link by applying the fault management function of thelink management protocol to the access network. The mechanism is achieved by analyzing the dateinformation collected from each ONU and OLT for the special WDM-PON structure. The thesis realezes the fault location simulation under two different scenarios: separate fault andcontinuous failures. A software is implemented to simulate the process of the fault location. Somediscussion about the defects and the scope of this fault location mechanism is analyzed bycomparing the result of the above simulation under two different scenarios. At last, the inadequaciesof this thesis and future research directions are given.
