Optical Burst Switching (OBS) technology combines both the advantages of the OpticalPacket Switching and Optical Circuit Switching, which eliminates electronic switching bottleneckin traditional optical network. OBS technology has been widely accepted one of best promisingswitching schemes in the next generation optical Internets. The introduction of GMPLS basedcontrol plane into OBS networks can not only improve OBS network performance with TrafficEngineering (TE) capabilities but also bring network performances improvements such as linkutilization, network congestion and packet loss ratio, etc. This thesis presents a comprehensivestudy on GMPLS based OBS network with theoretical analysis and simulations. The network architecture of the GMPLS/OBS hybrid network is introduced along with thenode and protocol structure, firstly. Then the control plane techniques and signaling protocols areanalyzed in detail. An improved link status broadcasting message based TE mechanism is proposedwhich can obtain the resource utilization on the next-hop nodes, thus the packet loss performancecan be improved. Finally, this thesis presents an improved BDP discarded mechanism which cansolve the false competition while the arriving time of BDP and BCP are different. Theoreticalanalysis and simulation results show that the improved mechanism can cut down the packet lossratio which supporting QoS in GMPLS/OBS networks.
