Digital Individual Soldier System (or DISS) emerges due to the demand ofbattlefield-integration. The future digital battlefield recommends all the function units(including the individual soldiers), to be connected together to co-operate and support eachother via communication network. DISS should be a system which is numeric, intelligent andnetwork-connected so that battlefield information can be transported and processed in areal-time status, thus the speed of the troops can be accelerated and the force can bestrengthened. The key part of DISS is the model of the DISS information system, which requires thepracticability, flexibility, and expenditure. With the advanced abilities the multiple demands ofoperations at present time or in the future can be satisfied, which leads to the research of theDISS model and related utilization.1. The background and current research of DISS are analyzed upon with some mainproblems. The background and goal of the study are analyzed which are the bases of this paper.2. After the analysis of the current DISS model, a new model DISISM based on the XMLtechnology is put forward to meet the challenge of the complexity of DISS. The hierarchy, themodule function and the rules of the interfaces are described in detail.3. In order to meet the requirements of DISS wireless communication, a communicatingmodule based on the Ad Hoc technology is designed. Utilization and performance analysis aredevised which makes it possible to utilize the prototype system.4. On the basis of all the studies described above, a prototype system is utilized which isaccording to the demands of DISISM. Tests show that the system can meet the demands of therequirement listed above.A summary and a discussion of the future work are brought forward in the end of thispaper.
