Satellite communication has some distinguished advantages such as wide covering, long communication distance and capable of providing integrated services, so that it develops very quickly and has become into an inevitable part in ship communications. Because of the growing demand for broadband multimedia services, the realization of DVB receiving and multimedia communications is a trend in developing modern ship satellite communication systems, which usually work in Ku band (14/12GHz) Therefore, it is quite significant to research on VSAT satellite communication systems of Ku band, which suit the above applications for small and medium size ships.This thesis firstly introduces the situation of research on miniature terminal ship satellite communication systems in China and abroad, then focuses on the system design and key techniques, including design of the system collectivity, the tracking servo system of the antenna and the miniature terminal.In the aspect of system collectivity design, the thesis analyzes and calculates its communication capability and functions, link budget and equipment configuring. For the tracking servo system of the antenna, the thesis analyzes the characteristics of various tracking modes as well as how to select them. As for the miniature terminal, the research mainly includes the implementation of miniaturization and IP data communications.
