Rich second generation (Rich2G) came to the spotlight markedly after theoverspeed car crash in Hangzhou in2009. As the first generation entrepreneurs enterretirement, the Rich2G are likely to helm China’s economy in the next few decades. Thegeneration itself is a product of the times and reflects the times. With the development ofChina’s economy and the deepening of China’s economic reform, we are likely to seeboth numbers of rich and poor people climbing and a worsening wealth gap. In times ofthis, the study of the media image of the “Rich2G” behooves our attention as itfacilitates a better understanding of the group in larger society and a more tolerant publicopinion of the group.This thesis chooses three influencing newspapers of different styles in differentareas for sampling and targets reports of the Rich2G from the period of2009-April,2012.With the help of frame analysis and content analysis, the thesis dissects the presentationof Rich2G’s group and individual image respectively. Through subject analysis anddiscourse analysis, the thesis endeavors to categorize the media image of Rich2G andput them in the bigger social picture so as to discuss the meaning and function of mediaimage and hatred-for-the-rich mentality.The thesis finds that in covering the Rich2G, media tend to focus on theprovocative sides and such construction strengthens the hatred-for-the-rich mentality insociety. A more balanced news choice and narration should be stressed.
