With the rapid development of multimedia services, the current high demand for network bandwidth is increasingly urgent, so broadband multimedia satellite communication system indisputably develops into the orientation of satellite communication. As the core technology of switching and multiplexing in.Broadband Integrated Service Digital Network (B-ISDN), ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) has a strong flexibility in resources allocation, a high quality of service, a guarantee of low delay and high security. The combination of ATM with satellite communication greatly enhances the capability of satellite communication in networking and providing multimedia services over wide areas. To achieve and promote broadband multimedia satellite communication based on the satellite ATM switching, the problem how to access the IP network widely applied in the terrestrial Internet to satellite ATM switching network has to be solved.This paper is based on the research project "Broadband Multimedia Satellite Communication System". By the analysis of signalling system in satellite ATM network, the research on IP/ATM fusion technology, and the characteristics of ATM-PVC (Permanent Virtual Connection) as well, the PVC signalling in broadband multimedia satellite communication system has been designed and implemented, in order to realize the research objective of accessing the terrestrial IP network to satellite ATM network to have multimedia communication.Firstly, the necessity of research on broadband multimedia satellite communication system, and the key points in the intergration of IP network and ATM are set forth; Secondly, the ATM network technology and IP/ATM fusion technology are introduced, and then the signalling system in ATM network is analyzed in detail; Thirdly, the design of the PVC signalling in broadband multimedia satellite communication system is elaborated, a set of interactive ethernet multimedia-specific signaling has been designed for IP/ATM integration, and this set of PVC signalling corresponds to the set of ATM-PVC signalling, so when the network control center (NCC) initiate PVC communication for users in this satellite system, the terrestrial IP/ATM adapting gateway could complete the transformation between these two sets of signalling to establish and release the multimedia satellite communication links; Fourthly, the process of sending and receiving signalling in the IP/ATM adapting gateway, dynamic maintenance of transformation tables, as well as the key technologies in the implementation of user terminal software and NCC agent software are described in turn; Last, it is demonstrated by building validation system that the designed PVC signalling system could work well and attain the design objective.
