The rapid development of communication industry has brought the life of people all aspects of convenience, but its high energy consumption also has a serious negative influence on the environment. The goal of green communications is to reduce the energy consumption and CO2emission so that communications can achieve low-emission, low-power and high-efficiency. It indicates the practical action of green environmental protection idea in communication industry. It is significant for our country to change the economic structure and achieve the international commitment to reduce carbon emission.In this paper, we investigate the basic theory and specific solutions of green communications. Firstly, energy efficiency metrics of green communications, including the (b·m)/s/Hz/W green efficiency are introduced. They point out the direction of green communications technology innovation. Secondly, this paper introduces the BS (Base Station) energy saving technology and On-Demand strategy from the view of individual BS. And then we propose a novel scheme-wireless resource trading, which expresses that in order to save energy resource we can trade the other type of wireless resource. After the theoretical analysis, the simulations results show the effectiveness of the corresponding adaptive algorithm. Finally, from the view of whole network, several kinds of energy-efficient network architecture are introduced. And then we focus our research on the active BS sleeping strategy. In order to achieve the purpose of saving energy by switching off the idle BSs, BSs can launch the tidal effect to concentrate the traffic load to some BSs. After that, we propose a novel BS sleeping algorithm and compare it with other algorithm through simulations. And based on this algorithm, we evaluate the effect of cell size on the energy consumption of whole network.
