Infrared imaging technology is widely used in military and civilian. With the rapiddevelopment of the technology, infrared image processing has become one of the hotspots on which many Academics, engineers are studying. Because of the feature of theinfrared detected elements, raw infrared image has the character of non-uniformity andlittle blind pixels. Therefore, the non-uniformity correction and blind pixel processingare two basic processes in infrared image processing. Blind pixel processing is the keytopic of this paper.The infrared images gotten from the infrared small target detection system containsmall target (main information we wanted) and blind pixels (noise). As the target area issmall, the effects of the detection will be disturbed by blind pixels. Therefore, in thisarticle, blind pixel processing algorithms are focus on small target infrared image.Blind pixel processing algorithms include: detection and compensation. At first,the paper analyzed the noises of the infrared imaging system, and then, analyzes thecharacteristics of infrared image, small target, and blind pixels, at last, presented threedifferent detection algorithms which are based on analysis. The paper also proposedgradient-based compensation algorithm which can not only eliminate blind pixels, butalso compensate the weakening of the target by compensation algorithm. The paperprovided simulation results for each algorithm to illustrate the effectiveness of thealgorithm.
