Digital rights management (DRM) is a way to protect multimedia content fromunauthorized use and copy. It provides the content providers with a method to protectthe private videos and music or other digital content from illegal copies and use.Access control is a key technique to realize DRM. Conventional access controlmechanisms however, cannot meet the requirements that constantly changing of userroles, and lack of flexibility, which influence the user experience. So they are notsuitable for DRM system directly. Rights Expression Language is used to describe therights to access digital content to achieve the access control of digital content. However,the existing rights expression languages generally are too complex to meet the variousbusiness models and it is difficult for the existing rights expression languages to satisfythe demands of being open and flexible of DRM system.In this paper, we first research the existing DRM systems, access controlmechanisms and rights expression languages. And then we make improvements in therole-based access control model and put forward a new access control method which issuitable for DRM system. Besides, we extract the essential characteristics of theexisting REL and the basic semantic of license authorization to construct the extensibleREL with micro kernel, by which we can describe the user rights with finely granularityand access to digital content flexibly in DRM system. According to the proposedscheme, we provide and realize a kind of credible authorized DRM system withmicrokernel REL. Through the tests, the expected performance of the system isachieved.
