China’s national geographic knowledge had been craved by westerners with the ever-growing intercourse between China and western countries in the first half of the19th century. In the process of reconstructing China’s knowledge hierarchy, The Chinese Repository could assume responsibilities to be a representative of production, which was issued by the American missionaries during1832to1851.Articles about China’s geography published in The Chinese Repository were studied in this thesis, through which I am able to examine the westerners’cognition towards China’s geography. These articles mentioned above are going to be divided into three classes according to westerners’different approaches to the cognition of China’s geography, viz. through documents, through navigation and survey and through personal experiences. In brief, this thesis is going to study how the China’s geography was "discovered" by westerners.
