Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are collections of sensors on a large scale.Because of low-price, typically sensors are small, low-cost, battery powered, andhighly resource constrained. Nowadays, WSNs are used in these areas: militarysensing and tracking, mission-critical, real-time traffic monitoring, real-time pollutionmonitoring, scientific exploration in wildlife environments, etc. Usually, WSNsoperate on sensitive data and in hostile unattended environments. Therefore, it’simportant to use key management system to protect these sensors and their data fromattacks. In this paper, a research of random key pre-distribution schemes was carried outthat covers the following:Firstly, an overview of key management in WSNs was presented. This includescategorizing of the existing key management schemes, description of the classicschemes, comparison of their characteristics, and analysis of their differences intabular form.Secondly, a kryptograph, that is more suitable for wireless sensor networks thanthe widely used Erdos-Ranyi random graph, was introduced. The Redoubtable SensorNetworks (RSN), which had a higher connectedness but less resilience was alsointroduced.Lastly, a modified q-composite random key pre-distribution scheme waspresented. It was found out that the modified q-composite random key pre-distributionscheme based on kryptograph was more resilient against low scale attacks than theoriginal one when the parameter was selected suitably.
