With the development of the technology of Internet and multimedia, the demand forcommunication services with wide-band and higher data rate is growing in next generation wirelesscommunications. As the available radio spectrum is limited, only by designing more efficientsignaling techniques can higher data rates be achieved. Recent research in information theory hasshown that the capacity of communication can be greatly improved in wireless communicationsystems with multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. The MIMO channel is constructedwith multiple array antennas at both transmitting end and receiving end of the wireless link. Thedata rate and reliability of communication systems can be greatly improved by spatial multiplexingand diversity gain provided by MIMO respectively. In MIMO system space time coding transmitsdifferent signals in different antenna and different moment to improve the performance of overallsystem. And it combines channel coding and antenna diversity technologies together so as toeffectively utilize spatial multiplexing and diversity.First this thesis describes the characteristics of wireless channel and Diversity theory, andanalyzes the channel model of MIMO system and the capacity of MIMO system. Then threespecific types of space-time coding for MIMO system are analyzed in this thesis, which areSpace-Time Layered code, Space-Time Trellis Code and Space-Time Block Coding. Then thedifferential space-time block coding scheme that is suitable for the situation when the channelinformation is unknown is analyzed and simulated. At last this thesis describes the OFDM theory, and discusses and simulates the performance of space-time coding for MIMO-OFDM system.
