Wireless sensor network(WSN) has the abilities to collect and process informationof various environments in real-time, its broad application prospect makes greatattraction of academic,industry and military communities. The sensor node has limitedresource, energy consumption is the core issue of wireless sensor network, so one of thekey technologies to resolve the problem is how to design the energy efficient wirelesssensor network protocol.Firstly, the dissertation briefly discuss some typical protocols of wireless sensornetwork, then describe the requirement of each network layer for cross-layer, andanalyze the necessity,the principles and methods of the cross-layer design for WSN.According to the characteristics of monitoring WSN, we adopt a basic model ofclustering network, combine with several typical cross-layer design methods of wirelesssensor network, we consider the specific characteristics of the network and take thecombination design as the basic cross-layer strategy, then we propose a energy efficientcross-layer protocol. At the same time, we study the feasibility of the strategy andrespectively analyze the different competitive environments between internal clusterand external cluster, take different communication mechanisms. We adopt TDMAmethod which is based on distribution in internal clustering mechanism, and nodestransmit data to cluster-heads directly according to transmission attenuation model; inexternal clustering mechanism, we consider the gradients of cluster-heads, which is setaccording to distance information, treat the status of MAC layer as subject, andestablish routing selection according to the MAC layer, there is a multi-hop datatransmission style in external clustering communication mechanism, cluster-headstransmit data to base station according to this mechanism. Simulate and analyze thecross-layer protocol by the network simulation platform, observe the state informationand model variables during simulation process by the user interface, analyze andevaluate the performance index, such as survival time、quantity of data transmission、network delay. The simulation results show that the protocol has good performance inenergy efficient.
