In recent years, wireless Ad Hoc network has been paid much attention by people because of its unique network organization mode, powerful invulnerability ability, flexible rapid deployment means and other advantages. In military communication, disaster rescue, emergency services and vehicle communication, wireless Ad Hoc network has been used widely. Wireless Ad Hoc network is different from traditional wireless network, it works without the support of any infrastructure and it has many characteristics such as dynamic topology structure, multiple hops, bandwidth limited and security low. What's more, in wireless Ad Hoc network, the energy of mobile terminal provided by battery.Due to the capacity of battery is limited, once a node is poweroff, the link will disconnect and even entire link will be unavailable. So it's very important for wireless Ad Hoc network to studying the energy efficient protocol. The traditional layered energy-saving protocol ignored the message exchange between the layers and the effect of energy saving is not apparent. The advantages of cross-layer design is that it not only pursue the optimize of a layer, but consider overall network to achieve the balance in various aspects. In order to improve the overall performance of wireles Ad Hoc network, the cross-layer protocol often works more efficiently. In recent years, many energy-aware routing algorithms have been proposed for wireless ad hoc networks. All of these algorithms only consider the energy consumption in transmission data, but none of them takes data retransmission into account. However, wireless medium is much unreliable compared with the wired medium due to its open nature.Various reasons, especially the power control, will lead to data retransmission and increase the energy consumption.therefore, the data retransmission should be considerd when we design a energy-efficient routing protocol. This paper introduces research background and key technology of wireless Ad Hoc network firstly.then, the energy saving technology is briefly introduced, and lists of several typical energy-saving protocol. The next, the paper give the presentation of the methods and significance of cross-layer design. Finally, according to the characteristics of wireless Ad Hoc network, this paper puts forward a cross-layer protocol with energy efficient. This protocol considers the residual energy and the retransmission caused by the power control.Choose overall routing consumption as the metric to select routing. This protocol is a cross-layer design routing protocol, which collects the residual energy and used power of nodes at the physical layer, determines power levels at the data link layer, calculates the energy consumption and select the optimal route in network layer. Through the simulation analysis we can see the proposed protocol can reduce node energy consumption, improve the network lifetime, achieve better energy-saving effect.
