With the development of the wireless communication technology, more and moreresearches focus on the wireless communication equipments of high-performance. Thepower amplifier plays an important role in various of wireless communicationequipments; therefore the performance of the power amplifiers will affect the wholeperformance of the equipment directly. In recent years, with the rapidly development ofthe semiconductor technology and microelectronic process,solid-state power deviceshave been widely used in the fields of radar, communications, electronic warfare andaerospace. As a result of these developments, there are more options for the engineers ofpower amplifier. Compared with the vacuum tube amplifier, solid state power amplifierhas the advantages of high reliability, low operating voltage, graceful failure, etc. Whilecompared with the traditional continuous-wave power amplifier, the pulsed poweramplifier can effectively improve the efficiency and reduce the system coolingrequirement,so the pulsed power amplifiers are widely used in pulse radar andhalf-duplex system. In this paper, it describes the manufacturing of the S-band pulsed power amplifier. The pulsed solid-state power amplifier uses the drain modulation to achieve the pulsemodulation. During the designing of the power amplifier, it achieves the gainrequirement of the power amplifier by using the three-stage amplification, and achievesthe output power requirement by using the combining power techniques in the thirdstage. In the RF chain we add two test wave circuit to realize the function of ALC (AutoLevel Control) and TMP. The ALC is mainly used for protecting the circuit from theover excitation, and the TMP is used for monitor the output power to judge the workconditions of the power amplifier. The detailed basic theory and design methods of thepower amplifier are also introduced in this paper. The manufacturing of the S-band pulsed power amplifier is described in this paper. The final test result shows that, the pulsed power output is over than16W under theband of2260±40MHz, the RF output gain is over than50dB, the PAE over than33%,the pulsed RF is4KHz, and with10%duty cycle. The power amplifier has realized therequirement of the index, and it can work stability on the conditions of continuous-waveand pulsed.
