The spread of network rumors is a kind of process, in which is found theinformation diffusion and resolution. It is also a kind of a commenting process. Hownetwork rumors become rumors lies mainly in the transmission of information. Thetransmission process works between the network media and their relaying channels, which constitute the information network. Those channels, in the process of reshaping, further construct, flatten, sharpen and assimilate network rumors. This is a "groupcontribution" effect from an interactive and collective action. The basic hypothesis of thispaper suggests that, in the process of spreading network rumors, there exists aphenomenon that consists both the irradiation and dissolution of network rumors. Thiskind of phenomenon also influences the spread of network rumors and their continuation. This research is divided into four chapters. The first chapter mainly combined the concept and characteristics of the networkrumors. This chapter examines the related literatures at home and abroad regardingrumors, and the concept and refinement of rumors. Then it summarized the four basiccharacteristics of rumors: the informative nature, the relevancy nature as related tocurrent affairs, the uncertainty of rumors’ unconfirmed nature, and the tendency forrumors leaning towards negativeness. Secondly, it puts forward the concept of networkrumors, and further sums up the network rumors’ four basic characteristics: its nature toblindly adhere to timeliness, its explosive characteristic, its ability to circulate in groupsand its features of virtual consumption.Chapter Two mainly discusses the reasons for the spread of network rumors. Itdiscusses separately the main carrier and the reasons for the spread of network rumors. The first section mainly analyzes the main carrier in spreading network rumors. Itconsists namely the government, network news media and Internet users, and of theirthree basic roles as the main carrier. The second section summarizes the reasons for thespread of network rumors: namely those groups with radical agenda and how they settheir relative strength in influencing the media; the chaotic nature of network mediadialogue and structure; and lastly, seemingly relative reasonable explanations to compensate for the unconfirmed information uncertainty. The third chapter discusses mainly the reasons for the dissolution of network rumors.Research found that the dissolution of network rumors is by two components: one is theinternal self digestion within the transmission system, while the second is dissolutionsources coming from without the network transmission system. The internal selfdigestion mainly refers to the network’s own process through the rational thinking by therumors spreading group, and the issues’ natural decay of the rumors. External dissolutionis better understood often mainly as government dissolution, legal sanctions, and thetraditional-media-guided public opinion. The fourth chapter analyzes the problems as currently seen in our country’sdissolution of network rumors, where there are two: such as heavy-handed dissolutiontechniques, which generally place the Internet users in the opposing side; and thequestionable nature of information that was meant to refute the rumors, etc. From theabove analysis relating to the research into network rumors, some constructivesuggestions are put forward, such as manufacturing network hot spots to distract Internetusers from network rumors, strengthen non-heavy-handed agenda settings, reinforce thepublic opinion guide in multiple dimensions, and tighten the network’s triple-stagechecks and balances, etc.
